Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Missoula, Montana, in the United States.
How has Paris inspired you in your
projects and classes?
I
am from an area of the world that focuses very little on its history and
architecture. I also come from a small and sheltered town in the mountains. I’m
used to recreation being primarily nature based and people who have similar
values and lifestyles. Paris is the opposite of all of the above and
consequently has inspired almost all of the art I’ve created here. Everything I
experience here is new and different from the life I’m used to. The diversity
of the people I’ve met in Paris inspires me to look at the world in new ways,
which in turn affects my art. The access I have to the art in Paris has
inspired me to branch out from my comfort zone and create things I might have
never done in the past.
Does
Paris feel like home? If so, how did you make it your own? What kind of
challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
I’m
happy to report that Paris does finally feel like home for me. In my first two
months, I had a period of extreme homesickness. I felt like I made the wrong
choice moving here, because I missed my space and friends so much. However,
after that rough patch, I slowly started feeling more and more comfortable with
my neighborhood and school. I moved into a new apartment with four roommates
and my own room, and I spent time making the space feel comfortable and
personal for me. I became friends with people that fit with my personality and
liked doing the things I liked to do. I began doing things like cooking and
exercising. After doing all of those things, I felt more at home in Paris than
I have anywhere else.
What
three words would you use to describe the Parsons Paris community?
Welcoming, creative, and supportive.
