ceramics + weaving: a material exploration
For this project, I carried out a material exploration involving weaving and ceramics to find a new way of making through experimentation and iteration. Challenging distinctions between art, craft, and design, this project draws on each discipline to uncover a new production method that reveals the beauty of imperfection. I chose to focus my experimentation on drinking cups, as they are simple enough to allow for many iterations but complex enough to be interesting. The concept of the cup allowed me to iterate easily and rapidly, and the process of knitting the textile forms used to make the cups was very simple. I was not aiming to design a perfect cup: The cup is simply the vehicle through which I carried out my experiments. I am excited to see where this project leads me. I came across a number of interesting and promising properties, the most intriguing being the translucency of the cups, resulting from the thinness of the walls. This project could go in many directions, but my interests lie mostly in the design of lighting and home goods and construction.
