  • Why did you decide to study at Parsons Paris?
I was drawn by the city and the richness in architecture; it just seemed unreal that the spatial construct of my everyday environment could possibly consist of such harmonious hues of creams or such distinctly segmented districts. My immediate environment often serves as the most influential catalyst for my work and my design process; I was therefore keen to experience and dissect Paris with fresh eyes. Fortunately for me, Parsons Paris offered an opportunity to experience the city with the comfort of learning the French language at my own pace as well as the option of attending Parsons New York in my junior year.

What activities did you participate in at Parsons Paris?
At the student-run Pop Up shop event, I had the chance to put my garments up for sale, and in doing so, I sold my first garment ever! It feels amazing to know that someone out there would invest in a piece by a little nobody like me. I’m filled with immense gratitude, and I feel even more motivated to create.

How did living and studying in Paris affect your experience?
Our participation in COP21 involved the creation of innovative textiles and T-shirts using scrap fabrics which would have otherwise been thrown away. Being exposed to COP21 shifted my concerns in design significantly. I felt as if fashion design back home is often considered luxurious to many and even perhaps irrational to those who don’t actively participate in fashion beyond their daily dress. I guess this really instigated a desire to approach fashion design from an industrial and product design standpoint, with a focus on user experience. I want to create garments which are relevant and of use to regular folk like my mom and dad.

Did you have any internship experience?
I have interned for Sacai for the past three seasons in their Paris showroom, and I recently interned at the studio of Ashley Isham in London. My responsibilities in Sacai included assisting in styling and working at reception; my experience at Ashley Isham primarily involved sewing and finishing garments.

How would you describe your experience at Parsons Paris?
It has been the most fruitful two years in Parsons Paris, and I’ve learned so much. I’m thankful for all the friends I’ve made here, and I’m looking forward to spending the next two semesters at Parsons New York.

What unique opportunities have you had studying at Parsons Paris?
I’ve never been as involved in any Fashion Week the way I’ve been in the past year. Serving as a backstage dresser for Hussein Chalayan and getting to attend shows has definitely made it an unforgettable experience.
