unmask feminine
The thought of how women feel the need to mask their femininity when seeking power and how they often feel the need to wear masks to fit the feminine stereotype led me to create a series deconstructing those phenomena.
I created three masks to present a story inspired by the concept of the destruction of the figure of the 1960s housewife. The beaded mask represents the harm caused by toxic beauty standards. The plaster mask represents the concept of not speaking one's mind for fear of sacrificing attractiveness or femininity. The metal mask represents the programming of women's behavior and hints at the destruction of the patriarchy and of the 1960s housewife.
This series allowed me to assume full creative direction in conceptualizing and producing my idea and to explore a new medium of making in creating the masks.
This series was created for the Integrated Design program's Creative Direction Intensive.
