Woven Vibration

My textile practice, reflected in my thesis work, translates invisible wave phenomena into tangible, three-dimensional woven structures that you can see and touch. Called Woven Vibration, my project transforms the physics of sound, light, and water waves into engineered fabrics that make the ephemeral suddenly physical and lasting.

I work at the intersection of traditional weaving and contemporary textile innovation, using advanced jacquard looms and digital manipulation to create pieces that mirror wave behavior. My process begins with studying vibrational patterns, such as Ernst Chladni's historic sound figures, then digitally layering and transforming these formations into weaving instructions. The resulting fabrics incorporate reflective threads, copper wire, and natural fibers to create surfaces that respond to light and movement.

Each collection explores different aspects of wave mechanics. Reflection and Refraction features hand-molded textiles that capture transverse and longitudinal waves in dramatic material compositions. Structured Textiles translates musical wave concepts like homophony and polyphony into layered woven structures. Confluent Patterns reimagines Chladni figures through contemporary weaving, creating metallic surfaces that harken back to electromagnetic properties while maintaining tactile warmth through cotton elements.

My work challenges the boundaries between sensory experiences, transforming what we typically hear into something we can touch and see. My pieces aren't simply visual representations, they're functional investigations into the ways in which mathematical wave principles can be embedded in textile architecture. Each piece invites multisensory engagement, allowing viewers to feel the invisible structures that surround us constantly and literally.

My practice bridges scientific documentation and artistic interpretation, creating objects that function simultaneously as documentation of physical phenomena as well as independent material explorations. My methodical investigation of vibrational physics through craft traditions opens new possibilities for understanding our material world. Through this approach, I'm making visible the hidden architectures of our vibrational world while contributing to contemporary discourse around materiality in digital culture.
