Bel Zaiden

Coming from an architecture background, I design fashion that integrates form and function. I view architecture and fashion as disciplines with much in common, including their basic function: to shelter and protect the human body. James Baldwin once wrote, "The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers." In creating this thesis collection, I considered a series of questions: How can femininity be reshaped from a woman's perspective in a male-dominated society? Is a covered body truly protected? Is a naked body a free body? My response was Don't Call Me a Lady, a bold, sophisticated contemporary fashion collection. Paired with the collection are garments created from repurposed men's clothing purchased at thrift stores.
