Solaic

Advising
Solaic examines the feasibility of synthesizing Natural Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (NDSSC) as a non-scientist. NDSSC are a type of solar cell that use plant matter instead of the silicon used in photovoltaic cells. NDSSCs mimic the light-capturing ability of plants, convert light energy into electrical energy, and can be manufactured using more sustainable methods than silicon-based PV cells. Solaic offers a curriculum and guide to make NDSSC technology more accessible for those outside of an institutional setting. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, weaving the language of energy literacy, botany, chemistry, and circuit design together through multimedia modules. Centered around displays of various prototypes that showcase the range of aesthetics, costs, and efficiency differently designed cells can achieve. The curriculum encourages an open-source approach to energy production, inviting others to share their experiments, recipes, and results. The curriculum serves not only as an experiential tool to learn about STEAM topics, but also as a practical guide for anyone who wishes to harness the power of the sun.
