  • Tangible Pain Scales

    Product Design (BFA)

    Advising
Pain is one of the most misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and undertreated of medical problems. Tangible Pain Scales is a set of tactile tools that enhance non-verbal doctor-patient communication and can help children self-report their pain adequately. The set consists of two scales: a continuous scale, which measures the intensity of the pain, and a categorical scale, which measures the character of the pain. The continuous scale is inspired by the Goldilocks story, and provides three response options instead of ten to express the intensity of the pain. Most existing pain scales measure only the intensity of the pain. Categorical pain assessment tools will help identify the category of the pain, such as sharp or dull pain, sore or tender pain, or stabbing or throbbing pain.  See more on issuu .

This project was completed in collaboration with external community member Dr. Daniel Tsze.
