Sensory Pathways for the Plastic Mind:
My thesis is a series of experimental, wearable devices that expand sensory experiences through cross-modal computer interaction. In four projects, I have appropriated common devices, transforming their sensory functionality:
Play-a-Grill is a combination digital music player and grill, a piece of jewelry for the teeth that is usually associated with Hip Hop and Rap music genres. Because the grill is worn over the teeth, sound can be transmitted to the wearer’s ears through the jawbone, rather than through outside speakers or headphones.
Echolocation Headphones enable the wearer to visualize space through parametric sound technology, which provides an auditory focal point similar to how our eyes provide a visual focal point, which enables a more detailed spatial image.
Pop and Spoon Matrices create visual experiences through the taste buds of the tongue, resulting in visual displays of gastronomic experiences.
Scent Rhythm is a timekeeping device that administers scents associated with various daily activities in an attempt to keep time with the body’s natural circadian rhythms. For example, chamomile and melatonin during the sleep cycles at night, and espresso and caffeine in the waking moments of the morning.
