Profile
Patrick Michael Hughes is a Fashion and Decorative Arts Historian, he develops and delivers comprehensive studio and lecture materials for a wide range of learners, including undergraduate and pre-college fashion and strategic design students, as well as advancing professionals and those preparing for graduate studies. His work extends into fashion journalism, where he actively reports on designers and global fashion events, lending to a strong voice in the press. As a specialist in fashion and decorative arts, his insights are frequently cited by national and international news outlets, making him a key contributor to both print and media coverage.
With an undergraduate degree in the History of Art from Manhattanville University and advanced studies in Paris, he immersed himself in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French Royal Decorative Arts and Fashion at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs-Musée du Louvre. Upon returning to New York, his research focused on nineteenth-century fashion and decorative arts, particularly English and American dress and interiors. He earned his MA in the History of Decorative Arts and Design from the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, with distinction for his work on twentieth-century American fashion, fashion culture, and fashion publications.
In his first-year lecture studios in the School of Art and Design History and Theory, as well as in his historically based art, fashion and design survey course overing he emphasizes a comprehensive, informed approach to decorative arts,design and fashion. His teaching philosophy centers on equipping students with the confidence to create and lead, with a critical understanding of narrative and cultural connections.
