Marie Stargala is a German-American architect and founder of Twenty Three Calvin, a design practice based in Brooklyn, focused on the production of buildings, interiors, and landscapes. The studio’s work is motivated by an exploration of aesthetics, informed by its elemental approach to methodology, ethics, and subjective experience. Recent works include eight units of affordable housing in New Haven, a pocket park in Manhattan, and an artist residency in Massachusetts, among others. Prior to Twenty Three Calvin, Marie worked at Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland.

Her research challenges frameworks that reduce materials to matters of efficiency, risk, and utility. Instead, she offers a more expansive ontological account of materiality, in which matter is not merely passive, but generative, relational, and expressive of temporalities far exceeding human perception or control. Her work contends with the ethical implications of understanding materials not as inert resources, but as active participants in complex networks of human and nonhuman forces. Marie holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design from Art Center College of Design. She is a Registered Architect and member of the American Institute of Architects. In addition to her practice, Marie has taught design studios at Syracuse University School of Architecture, and has been an invited critic at Yale, Columbia, Cornell, NJIT, SU, and Pratt.
