    Profile

Matthew Spiegelman mixes archives, tools, materials, and symbols of popular culture, spirituality, psychology, and technology to produce photographs, video, and sculpture that repeat and magnify the dissonant hidden order of daily experience. Spiegelman's work presents mental and physical signifiers as representations for anticipation, curiosity, confusion, and the sublime. He sets out to identify ways in which a collective psyche strives for desire and experience but struggles mostly through mundanity to arrive there. His approach is to recognize the innate compulsion to quest and uncover meaning but with the knowledge that to satiate this compulsion is also the way to fuel it.

His work was recently on view in The Body Issue curated by Frank Benson at Hannah Hoffman Gallery in Los Angeles, Photographs I Like To Have and To Hold curated by Darren Bader, and in Alchemical curated by Kevin Moore at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York.  He has exhibited in Los Angeles with ACME, Cottage Home, M+B Gallery, Marc Foxx, and Sister and in group shows in New York at David Zwirner, Andrew Kreps Gallery, and Untitled.  His work has been included in international exhibitions in Tokyo, Stockholm, and Milan.  Matthew has received commissions from *Wallpaper and Vogue and his work has been reviewed and published in Artforum, Aperture, Blind Spot, V Magazine, Fader, LA Weekly, New York Times Magazine, and New York Magazine.
