Mark Johnson is Associate Professor of Practice in the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs, teaching skills courses that include Monitoring and Evaluation, Project Management, and supervising capstone Practicum projects. His course Worst and Better Practices in International Aid and Development was launched in response to his direct and indirect involvement during his years as an aid worker in projects that had negative unintended consequences. Johnson has led the Ethiopia International Field Program since 2008, bringing students to work with local NGOs on project work, monitoring and evaluation, and independent primary research. He also gives lectures at Addis Ababa University and runs capacity-building workshops for national NGOs. He serves as Monitoring and Evaluation director for Consortium of Self-Help Group Approach Promoters, an Ethiopian coalition of women's microenterprise groups. 

Prior to joining The New School, Johnson worked in emergency relief, refugee resettlement and humanitarian aid for the International Rescue Committee, Center for International Rehabilitation, United Nations, and Human Rights Watch. He has worked in Pakistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Bosnia, Croatia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Burundi, and the U.S. He has a Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
