      The MFA in Playwriting prepares a select group of students for professional careers as dramatic writers and collaborative artists in theater, film, and television. The program offers a complete and relevant playwriting education with rigorous attention to craft and artistic exploration as well as consistent opportunities to develop those skills through presentations and productions.

      At the School of Drama, writers strengthen their voice and vision through intensive analysis and sustained collaboration with a diverse company of fellow writers, directors, and actors. Graduates gain experience with the full production process of creating new work for stage and film.

      Writing instructors at Drama are some of the most highly accomplished professionals in the country, with extensive expertise across all media and first-hand knowledge of the current industry landscape. Our award-winning alumni work regularly in theater, film, television, and emerging media.  

      Because we believe that the best theater emerges from an intelligent and passionate fusion of dramatic crafts, we are committed to the art of collaboration and are the only MFA program that integrates a regular, ongoing studio with actors, writers, and directors through all six semesters.

      Program Details

      The program is highly collaborative. Playwriting students work with the actors and directors in their program to generate new work, as well as receive training in writing for stage, television, and film. Please see the academic catalog for the current detailed program curriculum. 

      Over the course of the three-year program, students complete coursework, training, and opportunities in the following areas:

      • Coursework in writing for stage, television, and film
      • Dedicated collaborative studio work with MFA directors and actors led by professional artists and theatre companies
      • Collaboration with Design and Technology students from Parsons School of Design
      • Development and production of new work for stage and film
      • Links to the professional world and mentorship from working writers
      • Industry-attended workshop readings
