This course explores the potential of data mining, analysis, and visualization techniques for making media and evaluating the affects of media on target audiences.. As a Co-Lab, students will work in collaborative groups that will utilize the latest data mining, machine learning, visualization technologies and real-world data provided by collaborating industrial partners. The first half of the semester will consist of an introduction to these tools and data sets. In the second half of the course, students will pursue projects of their own design in groups, with the goal of producing data-driven media or advanced analysis and visualizations utilizing these techniques. This course required experience with analytics and/or market research and intermediate experience with data visualization and a modern programming language such as JavaScript, Python, or R. Prereq: NMDS 5444 Media Practices: Programming and/or NMDS 5517. A Transforming Data OR NMDS 5029 Media Practices: Data and/or NMDM 5321 Big Data and the Media OR instructor approval.
