In this course, we will explore the central literary achievements of Russian literature's "Golden Age." While our emphasis will be on close readings of major works by such writers as Alexander Pushkin, MIkhail Lermontov, Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, and Anton Chekhov, we will pay special attention to the development of an aesthetics of Realism and to the special role played by literature in Russian society of the period.
