Parsons Festival 2015

Parsons Festival 2015 will be held May 7-22 in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

NEW YORK, April 22, 2014— The New School’s Parsons School of Design presents its fifth annual Parsons Festival, an array of exhibitions, presentations, installations, workshops, symposia, gallery openings and performances that celebrate the next generation of artists and designers working in a range of disciplines.

The festival, which takes place May 7-22, will be held at The New School’s Greenwich Village campus and at venues throughout New York City including WantedDesign Brooklyn’s 15,000-square-foot showroom at Industry City, 31st Street, Brooklyn. Nestled on the Brooklyn waterfront in Sunset Park, Industry City is a 6 million square-foot former industrial complex that has been transformed into a hub for innovation and manufacturing.

An opening night party for Parsons Festival will be held at Industry City on Saturday, May 9, 7:00-10:00 pm. (Members of the press can RSVP to the party by emailing Scott Gargan at [email protected].)

“Parsons students are rigorous, aware, and engaged artists and designers making the world better, more sustainable, and more beautiful,” said Joel Towers, executive dean of Parsons School of Design. “We are so pleased to be able to share their extraordinary work with the larger art and design community in New York City.”

This year’s festival is once again part of NYCxDESIGN, a citywide initiative celebrating New York City’s contributions to and embrace of design. The 2015 festival lineup represents the breadth of Parsons graduate, undergraduate and pre-college offerings in all design fields: architecture, art and design history and theory, communication and graphic design, design strategies and management, design and technology, fashion design, fine arts, interior design, integrated and transdisciplinary design, lighting design, photography, product design and urban design.

Highlights of this year’s Parsons Festival, which are free and open to the public, include:

  • Exhibitions of selected student works at multiple venues including “Concept: Process” at Parsons’ Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, 2 W. 13th St., “Process: Concept” at Industry City, and original student works at The Kitchen, 512 W 19th St.
  • Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, founders of Opening Ceremony, in conversation with professor Hazel Clark on Thursday, May 7, 6-7:30 p.m. at The New School’s University Center, 63 Fifth Ave.
  • A production of Jonathan Dove’s Flight (1998), a Parsons and Mannes Opera collaboration, with performances on May 9, 7:30 p.m. and May 10, 1:30 p.m. at the Lynch Theater, 524 W 59th St.
  • Guided tours of the new Sunset Park Recreation Center, Parsons’ latest Design Workshop project, May 16-17

“Because of continued expansion, Parsons Festival has grown beyond the confines of The New School campus,” Towers said. “WantedDesign Brooklyn has provided Parsons with an opportunity to showcase the full extent of our work—a diverse collection of projects that speak to the high level of innovation, critical thinking and social engagement at the school.”
