bell hooks and NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray talk critical thinking at the new school

May 8 in New York City

WHAT:

Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School welcomes author, activist and feminist scholar bell hooks and Chirlane McCray, first lady of New York City and chair of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, in a conversation about critical thinking and healing in contemporary society.

Named “one of the nation’s leading public intellectuals” by The Atlantic, hooks has authored or edited more than 40 books and countless articles on feminism, spirituality, race, and class. They include the acclaimed Ain’t I A Woman?, Black Women and Feminism, and Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center. Her most recent book, published in 2012, is a collection of essays entitled Writing Beyond Race: Living Theory and Practice.

As the First Lady of New York City, Chirlane McCray has made shattering the stigma surrounding mental health and identifying ways to increase services her central focus. McCray also serves as Board Chair of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which works to make sure all New Yorkers have access to the programs and resources they need to achieve their full potential.

This event marks hooks' fourth visit to The New School, where she serves as scholar-in-residence. Join the conversation using the hashtag #bellhooksTNS.
