NEW YORK, Dec.1, 2014- In observance of World AIDS Day and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the global Day With(out) Art, The New School presents “Reckoning With AIDS,” a series of exhibitions and events focusing on arts and activism.

Kicking off the series, Anne Balsamo, Dean of The School of Media Studies at The New School will present a featured lecture, “Digital Memories and Media Arts Activism: Designing Digital Experiences for the AIDS Memorial Quilt” on December 1 at 6:00 pm at the Tishman Auditorium in The New School’s University Center at 65 5th Avenue. The lecture will explore the digital experiences created to extend the viewing of the AIDS Quilt, as well as ways to enhance the practices of cultural memory and contribute to innovative methods of archiving works of cultural heritage.

These digital experiences are collectively known as the AIDS Quilt Touch project. Balsamo explains: “With the AIDS Quilt Touch experience, we’re demonstrating how art, culture, and history can be enriched by advances in data visualization. It’s thrilling, important work that enables us to introduce this work of cultural heritage to a new generation, and reintroduce it in a different way to people who have encountered it before.”

In addition to the lecture, the AIDS Quilt Touch digital experience will be demonstrated in the lobby at the University Center on December 1 and 2. Four material panels from the AIDS Quilt will also be on display through December 15, on loan from the NAMES Project Foundation, an organization tasked with caring and conserving the more than 48,00 panels that make up the 54-ton Quilt.

Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the AIDS Quilt Touch project represents an exciting collaboration among a distributed team of expert digital humanities researchers from The Digital Studio for Public Arts & Humanities at The University of Iowa; Matrix, the Center for Digital Humanities and Social Science at Michigan State University; and the Public Interactives Research Team from the School of Media Studies at The New School. The collaboration aims to create a digital memorial that helps preserve significant cultural memories about AIDS, art, and activism, and personal memories about those who died of HIV/AIDS.
