NEW YORK, Sept. 5, 2014- On the eve of the People’s Climate March, journalist and best-selling author Namoi Klein will present her first book in seven years, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate, with a speech followed by a discussion with activists at the forefront of social justice struggles at The New School, the first stop on a national tour. The launch will kick off a weeklong series of events at the university focused on climate change.

Best known for her critically acclaimed bestsellers, No Logo andThe Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism—both of which tackle the unintended social and economic consequences of global capitalism and free-market reforms—Klein now turns her attention to one of the world’s most pressing social issues: climate change. Her new book, This Changes Everything, depicts the wake-up call our planet has given us in the form of fires, floods, storms, and droughts, and the search for the next sustainable economic model for our world.

"I am thrilled that Naomi has chosen The New School for Public Engagement to launch her new book on climate,” says Executive Dean Mary Watson. "Naomi's perspective advances our already deep dialogue, debate, and programming on climate change at the university, and is an excellent lead-in to greater discussions we will be having at The New School throughout the week.”

Part of a larger Climate Action Week that coincides with the historic People’s Climate March on September 2121, the book launch will be held at the John L. Tishman Auditorium in the new University Center at 63 5 Ave on September 18 at 6:00 pm. Klein will be introduced by activist, author, and 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben. Respondents include writer and public speaker on environmental justice and Indigenous rights Clayton Thomas-Muller; Estela Vasquez, Executive Vice President of SEIU Local 1199; Michael Leon Guerrero from Climate Justice Alliance; and Esperanza Martinez from Acción Ecológica. Visit the website for more information.

The event is sponsored by The Nation and The New School for Public Engagement as a part of the 10th Anniversary partnership celebration at The New School. The Nation, America's oldest weekly magazine, celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2015. 350.org and Working World are also sponsors of Klein's book launch. Editor's note: although the Klein event is sold out, seating is still available for select media.

“Since 1919, The New School has been a key convener of challenging discourse on the most pressing issues of our time. We are pleased Namoi's book—as well as the many events we have planned throughout the week—continues on this practice,” says Watson.

As a leader and official endorser of the People’s Climate March, The New School’s Climate Action Week will offer a diverse set of public programming featuring ongoing discussions, engagement opportunities, and scholarship. View the full list of the week’s events here.
