Loren Kang's BOB

NEW YORK, October 16, 2012 -- In a special ceremony during New York Comic Con, the U.K.-based vinyl toy company Dudebox announced the winner of its toy design competition with Parsons The New School for Design: BOB by Loren Kang, a senior in the BFA Illustration program at Parsons. Dudebox has produced a special limited-editon of the toy. Kang also received a Dudebox Creatives Project grant in the amount of $2,500.

“Dudebox launched 'Bob' at NYCC to huge critical acclaim,” said Dudebox’s Claire Beecham. “The fans and artists attending fell in love with Bob, his simple graphics and story made him a bestseller. Loren Kang appeared at the show to sign her figures and customize DIY. Loren is a toy designer in the making, and we wish her every success for the future.”

The Dudebox toy design competition took place this past spring as part of an Illustration Concepts course taught at Parsons by Illustrator and faculty member Caty Bartholemew. Each student designed two figures, complete with their own complex origin stories, likes and dislikes, and even smells. BOB hails from Planet Pepp, where he works as a sailor. He likes to eat seafood, and despises everything else; he smells like seawater.
