NEW YORK, March 13, 2012 - The New School's masters program in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management announces a new specialization in Food and the Environment. Housed in The New School's renowned Milano School for International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy, the new specialization offers a cross-disciplinary curriculum that grounds theoretical and policy training with hands-on food systems learning.

"The profound connections between food, policy, culture, and sustainability have never been more clear - or more pressing," said John Clinton, Director of the Environmental Policy and Sustainability program. "The new specialization in Food and the Environment builds on The New School's commitments to cross-disciplinary, civically engaged education to train a new generation of food policy leaders."

In addition to their Environmental and Sustainability Management core curriculum, Food and Sustainability students will work with food-focused faculty and select from courses including "Breaking Barriers: Social Ventures and Food Access," "Urban Food Systems," and "Social Venture Creation: Transportation and Food Access." The specialization will tap into the expertise of professors from across The New School for Public Engagement, including Milano's Nonprofit Management and International Affairs Programs, and the Food Studies program, a leader in the field.

Established in 2011, The New School's M.S. in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management's three-pronged curriculum trains students for fluency in environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Before choosing a specialization in Food and the Environment, Management, or Policy, students complete foundation courses in organizational change management, environmental science, and finance. In addition, fieldwork gives students hands-on experience with real-world urban ecology, often with an international focus. Prior to graduating, students work together on a capstone seminar, developing individual research- and practice-based projects in an interdisciplinary learning environment. The final application deadline for Fall 2012 admission is May 5, 2012.

The Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy trains the next generation of global change leaders. Part of The New School for Public Engagement, Milano offers graduate education in environmental policy and sustainability management, international affairs, nonprofit management, organizational change management and public policy. One of the nation's leading centers for the study of civic issues, Milano is home to institutes including the Center for New York City Affairs, the Community Development Finance Lab, and the Observatory on Latin America (OLA).
