THE NEW SCHOOL PRESENTS TRUTH BE TOLD

Annual Festival to Premiere 14 New York City Themed Documentary Shorts

NEW YORK, May 28, 2010— The New School presents Truth Be Told, a film festival premiering 14 documentary shorts that examine New York City, directed by recent graduates of its Documentary Media Studies program. Screenings will be held from Tuesday, June 1 through Thursday, June 3 from 7-9 p.m. in the university’s historic Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12th Street. They are free and open to the public.

The films were produced by a global roster of filmmakers and celebrate the diversity, emerging talent, and love for New York City that distinguish The New School’s Documentary Media Studies program. A one-year, intensive graduate level certificate program, Documentary Media Studies takes engaged storytellers from all walks of life and transforms them into professional documentarians.

Each evening of the festival will include a screening of four to five films grouped around a common theme. Tuesday’s Five Portraits program introduces viewers to the outsized and understated personalities of the city, including a legendary Brooklyn pizzaiolo and a reclusive vet trying to rebuild the ruins of his past. Wednesday’s For Love explores the nature of our relationships, with films highlighting the devotion of nannies and the aftermath of loss. On Thursday, The City examines New York from above and below ground—as a race-course for daredevil cyclists and a battleground of the sexes.

The screenings will be hosted by distinguished members of the New School community, including Deanna Kamiel, Emmy-award-winning documentary producer; Vladan Nikolic, award-winning filmmaker; and Deirdre Boyle, documentary critic and historian and director of the graduate certificate. A short Q&A with the filmmakers and their subjects will conclude each screening. A public reception with all the filmmakers will follow the Tuesday program.
