  • REFRAME DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP

The School of Art and Design History and Theory (ADHT) offers courses to students in all degrees. ADHT administers the first-year undergraduate curriculum, treating the analysis of art and design practices as essential to the formation of human knowledge and culture. ADHT also offers three master’s programs — Design Studies, Fashion Studies, and the History of Design and Curatorial Studies.

    FORGE YOUR OWN PRACTICE

ADHT frees you to develop your own academic focus. Core classes build close-knit intellectual program communities; electives generate interdisciplinary and cross-program discourse on art, architecture, design, and fashion as theory and practice. ADHT students represent diverse backgrounds, reflecting the school’s breadth of research. They go on to careers in media, criticism, curatorial and archival work and pursue advanced studies.

    BUILD ON THE CITY’S RESOURCES

New York City’s prestigious museums, cultural institutions, and curatorial platforms — including ADHT partners such as Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, whose collections and staff you have unique access to — support your work. The New School’s libraries, galleries, and research institutes expand your research options. Career services staff help you arrange internships in fields ranging from arts administration to archiving.

    INTEGRATE THEORY AND PRACTICE

ADHT seminars and lectures in criticism and writing guide your engagement with visual and material culture. Critical to studio work, these courses help you develop a systematic understanding of the role of art and design over time and in various geographical settings. You explore the contexts surrounding form-making disciplines and interpret culture production for a range of audiences.

    LAUNCH YOUR CAREER ON CAMPUS

In ADHT, you prepare for global careers emerging from the rise of visual culture and curatorial and media platforms. Student-run journals and ADHT conferences exercise your interpretation and writing skills. Teaching, research assistant, and study abroad opportunities broaden your academic experience. Internships and access to staff and collections of Cooper Hewitt and Musée des Arts Décoratifs apply your learning in real-world settings.
