A careful study of Husserl’s last, unfinished work from the mid-1930s. The course will also consider other manuscripts and lectures from the same period, including “The Origin of Geometry” and the Vienna lecture, “Philosophy and the Crisis of European Humanity.” Students who read German are welcome, as there is also an untranslated volume of supplementary texts from the Crisis period. Husserl’s text will be considered in relation to his earlier work, in relation to other thinkers of the period (e.g. Heidegger), and in relation to the turbulent social and political developments of the time in which it was written. Husserl deals with such topics as the history of science and philosophy, the lifeworld, phenomenology and psychology, and the concept of Europe.
