The core of this course will be a
close reading of selected texts of Marx. We will pursue them in roughly
chronological order beginning with the 1844 manuscripts and following his
intellectual and political development through the first book of Capital.
Key themes will include the meaning of critique, revolutionary praxis,
alienation, exploitation, surplus value, the analysis of capitalism,
imperialism, and the fetishism of commodities. Throughout we will be concerned
to do justice to the historical Marx and to consider his contemporary
relevance.
