• Policies

Services offered by the University Learning Center (ULC) are available by appointment and on a walk-in basis. All sessions start on the hour and are 50 minutes long.

    No-Shows

There are two kinds of no-shows: not arriving within the first 20 minutes of an appointment and canceling an appointment with less than three hours' notice.

After two no-shows in a semester, students have to meet with our coordinator before they can book additional sessions.

After three no-shows, students are limited to walk-in appointments for the rest of the semester and any appointments they have scheduled are canceled, including weekly appointments.

    Overbooking Policy

Students may have only two tutoring sessions scheduled with the ULC at a time, regardless of the subject. At least one appointment must end before they may schedule another appointment. Students with weekly appointments may schedule one additional session.

    First Occurrence

If a student books more than two appointments, a courtesy email is sent detailing the policy, and all but the first two appointments are canceled.

    Second Occurrence

If a student books more than two appointments a second time during an academic year, all of their appointments are canceled and the student must meet with the administrative coordinator before they can schedule further appointments. These meetings are not disciplinary; rather, they serve to inform and clarify the ULC’s policies. The student can still try for walk-in sessions, which are available every hour from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Third Occurrence

If a student books more than two appointments a third time, after meeting with the administrative coordinator, his or her scheduling privileges are revoked for the remainder of the academic year. The student can still try for walk-in sessions, which are available every hour from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Walk-In Sessions

Walk-in writing appointments are available every hour from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Students can try for a Time Management, Math, or Adobe walk-in session when a tutor is available, but we cannot guarantee availability, as there are fewer tutors.

Students can be seen for a walk-in session on the hour up until 20 minutes past the hour if they are present in the ULC waiting room and signed in to the Kiosk. Arriving early increases one’s chances of meeting with a tutor.

Continuing Education, Alumni, and Faculty Appointments

Students enrolled in a certificate program are not able to schedule appointments. However, they are welcome to utilize our walk-in service as often as they wish. Alumni and Faculty are also able to use our walk-in services.  For information about walk-in appointments please see above.

    Editing and Proofreading

Our goal is to help students become better writers and develop skills to work independently. Tutors generally point out areas that could be improved upon and work together with students to make changes. Tutors may often ask questions, either to develop or expand upon ideas, or to clarify unclear points. When edits or additions are made, tutors do not make them for you, but rather with you. If you are seeking a proofreader, our services may not be right for you.
