“The thing about The New School is, after you’ve graduated, you continue to connect with people. It’s really like I’ve never stopped being a part of this community and never stopped learning.”

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Master’s program (MA TESOL) at The New School changed the way Patrick Russell thought about teaching.

“The New school pushes the idea of reflective teaching,” Russell, who graduated from the program in 2012, says. “You go into the classroom, you teach, then you take time afterwards to reflect on the class: how it went, what the students learned, how well they learned it, how were your lessons, how were your activities? So for me, it was that reflective teaching concept that really has driven my career and my teaching experience afterwards.”

Russell currently works as an instructor and academic advisor at Pace University. Along with his teaching, he has also helped develop Pace’s English Language Institute curricula and assessments. Russell began his teaching career in Taipei, Taiwan, teaching English as a Foreign Language before moving to New York to study at The New School.

“I really wanted to work in a university level, higher education department,” he explains. “I wanted to get an MA TESOL, and (decided on) The New School because I could work online, study online, and work at the same time.

Along with the flexibility of the program, Russell says he also liked the social justice aspect of The New School and was impressed by the program’s faculty who “literally wrote the books that we used and that other MA TESOL programs use.”

But the best part, he says, is the community he's built because of the MA TESOL program.

“The alumni networking system is amazing,” says Russell. “The thing about The New School is, after you’ve graduated, you continue to connect with people. It’s really like I’ve never stopped being a part of this community and never stopped learning.”
