Gnarls is the official mascot for The New School and proudly supports fellow narwhals in all academic and athletic pursuits.
Gnarls LeGnar was born in the Arctic Ocean, about 50 miles east of Greenland’s border. When they were 13 years old, they separated from their parents, Gnar and Gnarlene, to seek warmer waters in the northern Atlantic Ocean, just outside of Newfoundland. Once there, they befriended local sea life and quickly made a name as Gnarly Gnarls for being the clumsiest whale the Canadians had ever seen. Eventually news of Gnarls’ mediocre athletic abilities (but charismatic personality) reached the United States. Curious to see what the land of freedom and chili cheese fries had to offer, Gnarls packed their rucksack and immigrated to New York in 2013. Today Gnarls lives in a rent-controlled studio apartment beneath the Hudson River and works as a motivational charades narwhal. They like Allen Ginsberg and Trader Joe’s taquitos.
You might have seen them out and about on campus, at various New School events, or posing with random pets on the street. You might catch them greeting newbies at Orientation Week, cheering on athletes at weekly intramural games, or helping their recreation team
members at various events. Wherever they might be, you can easily track them using the hashtag #wheresgnarls on social media.
Gnarls knows that when we support one another on campus, our pride and spirit grow, which is why they make it a priority to attend New School events. If you would you like to see Gnarls at your next event, fill out the booking form to kick off the appearance process.
