    Conducted in partnership with School of Media Studies and co-sponsored by the Bronx Documentary Center.

    The City Lore Documentary Institute offers students (Ages 18+) immersive learning in the fundamental elements of documentary story-telling though an activist cultural perspective. Taught by leading professionals in the field, students may specialize in Film, Radio, or Multimedia/Photography. Past featured guest speakers have included Emily Botein (radio producer, WNCY’s All Things Considered, Here’s the Thing), David Gonzalez (The New York Times), Rashaad Ernesto Green (award-winning filmmaker, Gun Hill Rd.), David Isay (StoryCorps founder, MacArthur “Genius” Award winner), Michéle Stephenson (Sundance award-winning filmmaker).

    While enrolled in the course, for-credit students enjoy all the benefits of a being general degree student in The New School’s Media Studies program, including student discounts, access and borrowing privileges to New School Libraries and special collections, Wireless Network access, laptop loans, computer access, and many other perks.

    • For-credit tuition is $3145, and some financial aid is available (see application for more details).
    • Participants must arrange for their own housing. However, City Lore will provide a list of suggestions for affordable accommodations.

    Grades, Credits, and Transcripts

    Our courses are fully accredited, but we recommend that you confirm in advance that credits are transferable to your academic program.

    At the end of the program, you can access your grade through our online student information system. Transcripts must be requested from the Registrar's Office. You will receive a student handbook with information explaining this process in detail.
