    Profile

Associate Professor Martinez is a producer and independent strategic communications and cultural consultant with over 20 years experience. Her clients include Hachette Book Group USA, NYC’s Mayor’s Office of Adult Education, and the Latin Grammy’s®. She is recognized for her pivotal role in publicity, marketing, and community engagement at El Museo del Barrio, the leading Latino cultural institution in New York City, specializing in Latin American and Caribbean art. A member of the public media family for over a decade, she worked on the publicity and marketing campaigns of over 70 acclaimed and award-winning POV documentaries and was the project manager for the organization’s rebranding campaign. She also served as Director of National Engagement for PBS’ Peabody award-winning series, Latino Americans, and was a consultant for The Takeaway (co-created and co-produced by Public Radio International and WNYC) where she served as an executive coach and diversity engagement and editorial consultant in five markets. Most recently, she was responsible for leading the communications strategy for public television's documentary series America ReFramed, winner of the Peabody and Alfred I. duPont-Columbia awards.

Her film credits include producer of the documentary films Lucky (2013) about a homeless LGBTQ single mom who dreams of stardom. Spanning more than five years on the streets of New York City, this intimate story of survival follows Lucky Torres, a homeless mother masked in tattoos who longs to rise from a life of darkness and poverty, and Decade of Fire (2019) uncovers the story of why the South Bronx burned in the '70s and offers a new narrative for the people who stayed. The documentary has enjoyed significant press coverage and continues to be screened in community and at festivals. It will reach a national audience on the PBS' documentary television series, Independent Lens.  Additionally, she founded Habana/Harlem® a music and humanities initiative to aid in community bridge-building, while supporting the work of under-recognized artists such as the  forthcoming musical release of the 35th anniversary of New Yor-Uba: A Celebration of Cuba in America, winner of a Chamber Music America grant for composer and jazz pianist, Michele Rosewoman. Martinez is the recipient of a Rockefeller Cultural Innovation Fund Award for The New Audience Project™, a curriculum and program she created to engage marginalized women as cultural ambassadors, and to train them as micro-entrepreneurs in the cultural economy.

She sits on an advisory committee for The Metropolitan Museum of Art and serves on the boards of Women Make Movies, Uprose, The Association of American Cultures and Pepatian. Prior board service includes Third World Newsreel and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. An active cultural advocate and leader, Martinez nurtures the next generation with hands-on mentoring. She earned a Masters in Public Administration from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs.
