Do you want to build your English proficiency to work as a professional chef or study local and global food issues?
The ESL + Food Certificate, offered by English Language Studies at The New School in collaboration with the
International Culinary Center (ICC), is designed for international students who wish to pursue professional and/or academic training in culinary arts and food studies but need to improve their English language skills. A central feature of this program is the Language of the Kitchen course, presented in the video above. Please note: This course now runs as a series of extracurricular activities and experiences in a flexible format. The certificate program provides a high-quality English language education for students who want to attend culinary school at the ICC, obtain a degree in Food Studies at The New School, or choose another career path within the food industry.
To apply to the ESL + Food Certificate program, fill out the online
application form. Accepted students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents will receive information about applying for a visa to study in the United States as part of their letter of acceptance.
Summer 2018 classes run from June 11 to August 7, 2018.Fall 2018 classes run from September 12 to December 11, 2018.Spring 2019 classes run from January 28 to April 30, 2019.
The ESL + Food Certificate is part of a suite of ESL + certificates, innovative language preparation programs that provide a high-quality English language foundation and a pathway for students to continue their academic and professional careers at The New School and elsewhere. Our other
certificate programs are
ESL + Design,
ESL + Music, and
ESL + University Preparation.
Students in each program receive a certificate stating the number of hours of study completed in English as a second language after each semester of study. Permanent academic records are kept, and students can obtain a transcript of their courses.
The New School is a leading university in New York City that offers more than 135 degree programs, including a
BA and BS in Food Studies and an
AAS in Food Studies. Students in the ESL + Food Certificate program have contact with members of the Food Studies faculty, which includes experts on culinary history, food policy, and the food business.
The ESL + Food Certificate offers a pathway to a bachelor's degree (BA/BS) or AAS in Food Studies at The New School, as well as a pathway to a culinary program at ICC. Students who take courses at ICC may apply credits earned there to a degree within The New School's Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students upon admittance.
