The New School Appoints Alex Perez Senior Vice President and General Counsel

New York, March 24, 2023—The New School today announced the appointment of Alex Perez, currently Chief of Staff and Senior Vice Chancellor in the Office of the Chancellor-Provost at Rutgers University-New Brunswick and Associate General Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel for Rutgers University, as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. He will assume the role on June 1st. 

Perez will lead the university’s legal affairs, advising and providing guidance on a wide range of legal matters to academic and administrative leaders and the Board of Trustees.

A highly accomplished attorney, Perez brings nearly two decades of experience in legal affairs at leading law firms and in higher education. He comes to The New School from the Rutgers University—New Brunswick campus, where he serves as Chief of Staff and Senior Vice Chancellor in the Office of the Chancellor-Provost, overseeing a broad spectrum of administrative, operational, and service functions across various Rutgers–New Brunswick units. Perez concurrently serves Rutgers University as Associate General Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel. In this capacity, he works closely with Rutgers University leadership on a variety of legal matters, focused on athletics and international matters. Prior to serving as Chief of Staff and Senior Vice Chancellor, Perez worked in the Rutgers Office of the General Counsel where he provided legal advice in all aspects of education law, including student affairs, faculty matters, governance issues, athletics and academic affairs.

Perez started his legal career as an associate in the general practice group at Sullivan & Cromwell, LLP in New York City. He received a B.A. from Columbia University and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law. He is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and is a frequent presenter and speaker on topics relating to athletics and international matters.
