NEW YORK, April 22, 2019 – The New School's College of Performing Arts welcomes the public to the 9th edition of (Un)Silent Film Night, an ever-popular series in which students from Mannes School of Music and the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music perform live music to classic and contemporary films.
This special May 10th program will feature three ensembles performing improvised music to a quartet of short silent films. Star members of The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music faculty will perform side by side with students.
Program:
Teinosuke Kinugasa: A Page of Madness (1926)
The NYC Composers Ensemble, directed by Mary Halvorson and Nir Felder
Charlie Chaplin: The Rink (1916)
The Matt Wilson Student Ensemble, directed by Matt Wilson
Stan Brakhage: Lovesong (2001) &
George Méliès: The Impossible Voyage (1904)
Improv Ensemble: Film, directed by Angelica Sanchez
"All of us at the College of Performing Arts are excited about this combination of films, faculty, and students," said Keller Coker, Dean of School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. "The experimental nature of most of the films, juxtaposed with these talented improvising musicians, is sure to make for a very memorable evening."
The (Un)Silent Film series has been critical in advancing the resurgence of film screenings with live music. Previous editions have drawn capacity crowds to the 400-seat Tishman Auditorium and have been hosted by Matthew Broderick, Bill Irwin, Rob Bartlett, Ed Rothstein, and Michael Bacon. (Un)Silent Film Nights have presented the world premieres of works composed for The Birds and The Immigrant (by Nathan Kamal and Alexis Cuadrado respectively), a New York premiere of a score by Hollywood composer Craig Marks for the film Sherlock, Jr., and Charlie Chaplin's original scores for Gold Rush and other Chaplin classics.
