mayor Bill de blasio congratulates the new school on its centennial anniversary

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio

New York – Citing The New School as a “global epicenter of innovation” that has strengthened New York City’s legacy, Mayor Bill de Blasio congratulates the university on its 100-year anniversary. In a letter sent to the university, the mayor recognizes the innovations created at The New School and its support of intellectual freedom and social good since its founding.
Mayor de Blasio writes:

"Dear Friends:

It is a great pleasure to congratulate the New School on its centennial anniversary.

Through its dynamic approach to design, art, and scholarship, the New School has long strengthened New York City’s legacy as a global epicenter of innovation. Since 1919, this institution has embraced its founders’ commitment to intellectual freedom and progressive social change. As the first American university to teach the history of film, the first to offer classes in women’s history, and one of the first to introduce photography and jazz courses, the New School has a tradition of redefining the boundaries of academic excellence. Its five colleges have hosted some of the finest and boldest minds of the 20th century, from John Maynard Keynes to Frank Lloyd Wright, and the institution as a whole has proven remarkable in its ability to remain at the cutting edge of higher education for an entire century. I applaud the New School’s staff, students, and supporters for their work to advance intellectual rigor and creativity in our great city, and I look forward to all that the university will continue to accomplish in the years ahead.

On behalf of the City of New York, congratulations on 100 wonderful years. Please accept my best wishes for a spirited celebration and continued success.

Sincerely,

Bill de Blasio, Mayor"
