Food writing and journalism in the digital age


The New School Food Forum will host writers, chefs, critics and editors who will discuss the challenges facing food writing professionals during a time of transition.


 

New York, March 26, 2019 -- The craft of food writing continues to be in transition from the traditional world of magazines, newspapers, and cookbooks, to the digital world of food blogs, digital books, websites, online restaurant reviewing, food photography, and the influence of social media networks. Industrial professionals and experts predict that in the years to come, there will be many more changes that lie ahead.

On April 5th and 6th, The New School’s Food Studies program is sponsoring, “Food Writing Forum: Opportunities and Challenges in a Digital Age” More than 50 writers, editors, publishers, journalists, chefs, and food personalities, will come together to examine and debate the positive and negative food writing trends in the digital age.

The group includes Kate Cox, (Editor, The New Food Economy) Marion Nestle, (Author and Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, Emerita, at New York University) Florence Fabricant, (Food and Wine Writer, The New York Times) Fabio Parasecoli, (Professor Nutrition and Food Studies, New York University)  Ruth Gresser, (Founder and Chef, Pizzeria Paradiso) Madhur Jaffrey, (Food and Travel Writer) Elle Simone Scott, (Founder of SheChef) Priya Krishna, (Food Writer and Contributor to The New York Times, Bon Appétit and The New Yorker) Gabriella Gersenshon, (Food Writer and Wall Street Journal contributor) Adam Platt, (Restaurant Critic, New York Magazine) Dorie Greenspan, (James Beard award winning Cookbook Author)  Rozanne Gold, (Chef, journalist and cookbook author) and Emily Weinstein. (Deputy food editor at The New York Times.) The keynote speaker is Dianne Jacob, the author of Will Write for Food.

Panels will include “Newspaper and Magazines in the Digital Age,” “Restaurant Criticism in a New Age,” “The Dark Side of the Internet,” and “Not your Average Food Snapshot.” The forum offers participants an opportunity to better understand the changes and opportunities in food writing compared to the print world of a decade ago.  

Panels, presentations and workshops are scheduled for Friday, April 5 (10 AM-4:15 PM, Reception 4:15-6 PM) and Saturday, April 6 (10 AM-2 PM). Book-signings and many networking opportunities are also scheduled. The conference registration fee is $125 for both days. The event will take place at The New School 65 West 11th Street, Wollman Hall, 5th Floor.
