Artist Theaster Gates will present his current work in a public lecture and conversation with architect Billie Tsien. Gates will discuss his work as the director of University of Chicago’s Arts + Public Life initiative, and with the Rebuild Foundation, which he founded in South Chicago.

Theaster Gates is an artist whose practice spans space development, object making, performance, and critical engagement with many publics. Through his project, Rebuild Foundation, Gates is spearheading numerous development projects in some of the most divested parts of his native Chicago. He is currently a professor in the University of Chicago’s Department of Visual Art and serves as director of the school’s Arts + Public Life initiative, which seeks to “build creative connections on Chicago’s South Side through artist residencies, arts education, and artist-led projects and events.”
Billie Tsien is an architect and co-founder of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects with her husband, Williams. She is currently President of the Architectural League of New York and Director of the Public Art Fund.
