NEW YORK, December 9, 2014 – The Young Artists of The Mannes Opera with members of The Mannes Orchestra will perform Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, two one-act operas by Giacomo Puccini, on Thursday, December 18, 2014.

Presented by Mannes College The New School for Music, the operas will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in a fully staged production and at 1:30 p.m. in a semi-staged matinee. Both performances will take place at Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse, 695 Park Ave., New York City.

The operas will be conducted by Artistic Director Joseph Colaneri and directed by Laura Alley, with set design by Roger Hanna, costume design by Helen E. Rogers, hair and makeup by Amanda Miller, and lighting design by Jeff Davis.

“The opera program at Mannes is a source of great pride for our community,” Mannes Dean Richard Kessler says. “The students bring their hopes, dreams, and talent, all supported by a wonderful faculty. This classic double bill is bound to be a real success.”

Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi are two of Puccini's most unique works, representing highly successful forays into new compositional and dramatic styles. Suor Angelica is an intensely dramatic and deeply psychological work that plays the conformity of the communal life against the personal tragedy of the title character; Gianni Schicchi is the composer’s only completely comic opera and represents the culmination of the long tradition of Italian opera buffa.

“These two operas make a wonderful study for our young artists at the Mannes Opera,” Colaneri says. “Preparation and performance of these works hones their abilities to create strong dramatic characterizations within short musical spans and develops their ensemble skills. It is a joy to guide the young artists at Mannes into the heart of these two unique and important operas.”

Along with his position at Mannes, Colaneri serves concurrently as music director of the Glimmerglass Festival. In addition, he recently completed 15 seasons on the conducting roster of the Metropolitan Opera. Under his leadership, The Mannes Opera has been praised by the New York Times for “a stellar reputation for the quality of its presentations and the excellence of its student singers.”
