New York (February 1, 2013) - New School President David E. Van Zandt and Board Chair Joseph Gromek have announced that Bob Kerrey has resigned from the role of president emeritus, effective January 31, 2013.
"As president, Bob Kerrey guided The New School through a complicated period in the history of higher education,” said Gromek, who became Board Chair in November 2012. “With the education landscape continuing to change, The New School is fortunate to have Bob as our ally and advocate."
A transformative leader, Bob Kerrey served as president from 2001 through 2010. During that time, The New School evolved into a major degree-granting urban university, widely recognized for its emphasis on design in a social context. Kerrey is credited with doubling the size of the full-time faculty and securing The New School’s future by raising more than $110 million to advance key academic and administrative objectives.
In his years as president, Kerrey oversaw more than $100 million in improvements to the Greenwich Village campus. He successfully spearheaded the largest construction project in New School history: the University Center, a 375,000-square-foot anchor building which is scheduled to open in fall 2013 with state-of-the-art classrooms, academic resource spaces, an auditorium, a library, and a residence for more than 600 students.
"The New School is a unique force in higher education, and I will always be proud to have been a part of it," said Kerrey. "For ten years, it was my privilege to work with and learn from faculty and students at the vanguard of scholarship and social justice."
New School president David Van Zandt said, "Bob’s leadership gave us a solid foundation upon which to build our future – one distinguished by new global partnerships and educational programs that place our student on the cutting edge of creativity, innovation and social action."
Kerrey will serve The New School as a consultant until the end of the academic year, working at the president’s behest on select projects as well as readying the University Center for its grand opening.
