NEW YORK, February 27, 2012 - The New School for Public Engagement announces its new Summer Institute for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The two-week residential program offers a unique opportunity for intensive study of language pedagogy with hands-on experience in the heart of the nation's most diverse city.
"As a global capital, there is nowhere on earth like New York City, and there is no better place to study the teaching of English," said Gabriel Diaz Maggioli, Chair of English Language Studies, The New School for Public Engagement. "The New School's new Summer Institute takes full advantage of New York's international spirit while at the same offering pedagogical instruction at the vanguard of the TESOL field."
The TESOL Summer Institute offers of three thematic workshops, including Teaching English to Young Learners, Teaching Language Teachers, and The Resourceful Teacher, which trains teachers to work with peers and communities to continuously develop their skills. In addition to classroom instruction, students will engage in professional activities like lectures, workshops, and book presentations, as well as museum visits, neighborhood tours, and other activities that showcase New York's unparalleled cultural offerings.
The New School's English Language Studies is one of the world's most prestigious and well-reputed English Language pedagogy programs. Core faculty includes leaders in the field like Diaz Maggioli, Scott Thornbury, Jeremy Harmer, and John F. Fanselow. Welcoming ESL professionals from around the world, English Language Studies at The New School offers experiential learning both online and on-site at our Greenwich Village Campus. In addition to the Summer Institute, the department offers a TESOL certificate and a master's of arts degree, from which graduates have gone on to teach in language schools and universities in the United States to Belize, Tunisia, Brazil, Poland, Turkey, Korea and Japan and elsewhere.
