NEW YORK, August 1, 2011--The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music swept in Downbeat magazine's 59th Annual Critics Poll, with faculty or alumni ranking in more than half of the poll's 47 categories. The poll, released in the magazine's August 2011 issue, reflects the opinions of 80 jazz critics from leading print, online and radio outlets.

The New School's 32 separate faculty and alumni honors include 17 citations in "Rising Star" categories, as well as four first-place nods for New School alumni: Mary Halvorson (Rising Star - Guitar), Susie Ibarra (Rising Star - Percussion), and Robert Glasper (Rising Star - Electronic Keyboard). Four alumni--Mary Halvorson, Robert Glasper, Avishai Cohen, and Marcus Strickland--were each honored in three separate categories.

"The Downbeat Critics Poll is a resounding endorsement of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music's first 25 years," said New School Jazz Director Martin Mueller. "The high rankings of both our virtuoso faculty and 'Rising Star' alumni speak to our performer-educator model's success in inspiring and cultivating influential young artists."

Founded in 1986, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music boasts one of the most accomplished teaching faculty in jazz education, with artist-instructors including saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, trumpeter Charles Tolliver, and percussionist Bobby Sanabria, all of whom appeared on Downbeat's Critics Poll. About The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music

The musical manifestation of The New School and its legacy, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music is a four-year undergraduate program offering B.F.A. and B.A./B.F.A degrees, built on a foundation of one-on-one instrumental tutorial, master class workshops, and classroom learning. Steeped in progressive tradition while moving forward into new frontiers of sound and experimentation, New School Jazz is a rarity among conservatory music schools. With instructors who are active, professional musicians and the backing of a major university, the school provides its students with the leeway and encouragement to break through artistic barriers, the counsel of veterans in maneuvering through the terrain of the music world, and a solid academic foundation to sustain and enrich their efforts and evolution.
