New School President Bob Kerrey to confer honorary degrees to
Henry H. Arnold, William F. Baker, Abbey Lincoln,
Franklin A. Thomas, and John L. Tishman

(New York, NY –April 29, 2002) New School University will hold its 66th Commencement Ceremony on Wednesday, May 22, 2002, 3:00 PM at The Theater at Madison Square Garden located on Seventh Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets in NYC. This year's commencement speaker will be Bernard Lewis, the highly eminent authority on Middle Eastern history. New School University President Bob Kerrey will address the graduates, and confer the honorary degrees. James Lipton, Dean of the Actors Studio Drama School, will give the closing remarks. Honorary degrees will be presented to investment banker and New School Trustee Henry H. Arnold; President and CEO of Thirteen/WNET William F. Baker; Middle Eastern historian Bernard Lewis; jazz singer Abbey Lincoln; Chairman of the September 11th Fund Franklin A. Thomas; and Chairman and CEO of Tishman Realty & Construction and New School Trustee John L. Tishman.

New School University will award 2,240 degrees at its Commencement Exercises. New School University's eight divisions will celebrate Commencement Exercises on Wednesday, May 22, 2002. These divisions include: Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science, Eugene Lang College, The New School, Parsons School of Design, Mannes College of Music, the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program, the Actors Studio Drama School, and the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy.

The Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science (Kenneth Prewitt, Dean) will award 81 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 2 Master of Social Science degrees and 186 Master of Arts degrees.

Eugene Lang College (Beatrice Banu, Dean) will award 147 Bachelor of Arts degrees (in five concentrations). New School University/Joffrey Ballet Program will award 8 Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.

The New School (Ann-Louise Shapiro, Dean) will award 139 Master of Arts degrees, 79 Master of Fine Arts degrees, 28 Master of Science in Teaching degrees, 148 Bachelor of Arts degrees, and 23 Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.

Parsons School of Design (H. Randolph Swearer, Dean) will award 113 Master of Fine Arts degrees, 17 Master of Architecture degrees, 102 Master of Arts degrees, 433 Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, 78 Bachelor of Business Administration degrees, and 212 Associate in Applied Science degrees.

Mannes College of Music (Joel Lester, Dean) will award 41 Master of Music degrees, 35 Bachelor of Music degrees, 21 Professional Studies Diplomas, and 8 Extension Diplomas.

New School University's Jazz and Contemporary Music Program (Martin Mueller, Executive Director) will award 39 Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.
The Actors Studio Drama School (James Lipton, Dean) will award 64 Master of Fine Arts degrees (in Acting, Directing, and Playwriting).

The Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy (Edward J. Blakely, Dean) will award 175 Master of Science, Arts, and Professional Studies degrees, and 60 Bachelor of Science degrees.

HENRY H. ARNHOLD
Doctor of Humane Letters

Henry H. Arnhold is co-chairman and director of Arnhold & S. Bleichroeder, Inc., an investment banking firm and international securities broker. He also is president of the Arnhold Foundation, which primarily supports animal welfare organizations, education and the arts. He serves on the American Council on Germany, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Foreign Policy Association and the National Committee on American Foreign Policy. He has served on New School University's Board of Trustees since 1985 and has been a member of the University's Graduate Faculty Board of Governors since 1984. He also serves on the University's World Policy Institute's advisory board, as well as its visiting committee. Mr. Arnhold was born in Dresden, Germany and came to New York City with his family in 1937.

WILLIAM F. BAKER
Doctor of Humane Letters

Dr. William F. Baker has taken a leading role in the shaping of American broadcasting in both the commercial and public sectors. A well-known advocate for the educational potential of television, Dr. Baker has served as president and chief executive officer of public television station Thirteen/WNET New York, the largest producer of cultural and arts programming in America, since 1987. An author, lecturer and sought-after expert in the field, he also is president of the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The Academy has honored Dr. Baker with seven Emmy's, including an award for outstanding contribution to the advancement of television in 1987. Defined by far more than just his well-respected career, Dr. Baker is an adventurer, having carried the Explorers Club flag to the top of the world in 1983, becoming one of the first people in history to visit both the North and South Poles. He received his bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University.

BERNARD LEWIS
Doctor of Humane Letters

Bernard Lewis is the Cleveland E. Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Emeritus, at Princeton University. He was educated at the University of London, where he obtained his B.A. with honors in history with special reference to the Near and Middle East. His Ph.D. is in the History of Islam. He also studied law, but turned to teaching instead. He did his graduate work at the University of Paris and spent some months touring the Middle East. Since 1974, he has been at Princeton University. He is the author of over two dozen books; his latest book, What Went Wrong: Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response, has been on the best seller list.

ABBEY LINCOLN
Doctor of Fine Arts

Abbey Lincoln is a poet, singer, actress, composer and outspoken social commentator. She was born Anna Marie Woolridge, the tenth of 12 children and grew up in Michigan in the small township of Calvin Center, which was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad. Her early influences included Billie Holiday and Coleman Hawkins. In 1955, she recorded her debut album on Liberty Records, "Affair... A story of a Girl in Love." Legendary percussionist Max Roach was able to get her a recording contract with Riverside Records in 1957. Abbey and Max Roach recorded "Freedom Now Suite." In the 1960's, she starred opposite Ivan Dixon in the film "Nothing But A Man" and alongside Sidney Poitier and Beau Bridges in "For Love of Ivy." She continues to lecture at schools and universities.

FRANKLIN A. THOMAS
Doctor of Laws

Franklin A. Thomas heads the TFF Study Group, which focuses primarily on assisting the development process in Southern Africa. He was president of the Ford Foundation from 1979-1996. Before joining Ford, Mr. Thomas was the first president of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. He served as Deputy Police Commissioner in Charge of Legal Matters for the New York City Police Department and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Mr. Thomas serves on several corporate and nonprofit boards and is an advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations. Franklin A. Thomas was most recently appointed as Chairman of the "September 11th Fund." The Fund was established by The New York Community Trust and United Way of New York. (The September 11th Telethon Fund was established to collect donations pledged through the entertainment industry's "Tribute to Heroes," the two-hour telethon that aired live on multiple TV networks and thousands of radio stations around the world.) On his appointment to lead the Fund, Lorie A. Slutsky, president of The New York Community Trust and New School University Trustee, said, "We are enormously pleased that Frank Thomas, a man of extraordinary experience, integrity and judgment, has agreed to lead this effort. We established the September 11th Fund to provide a way that thousands could help the victims of the attack, their families and communities with confidence that their funds would be used widely, effectively and fairly." Mr. Thomas graduated from Columbia Law School in 1963 and received a B.A. from Columbia University in 1956.

JOHN L. TISHMAN
Doctor of Humane Letters

John L. Tishman has been Chairman and CEO of Tishman Realty & Construction, Inc. for over 25 years. In this capacity, he has skillfully guided the success of the legendary company his grandfather Julius founded in 1898. Mr. Tishman was personally in charge of such landmark projects as the World Trade Center in New York, the renovation of Carnegie Hall, The John Hancock Center in Chicago, The Century Club Theme Center in Los Angeles, and Walt Disney Company's EPCOT Center in Orlando. He has been a Trustee of New School University since 1981. He is a committed leader in educational and other humanitarian endeavors, with having served on the Board of the NYU Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House, The Weizmann Institute of Science, and Pratt Institute. Currently he serves on the Boards of Carnegie Hall and The Central Park Conservancy. He will step down as Chairman of New School University's Board at the end of May, after seven years of outstanding leadership.
