SAMUEL WONG TO CONDUCT THE MANNES ORCHESTRA ON

Program to include Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Piano Concerto No. 4
with student soloist Shimako Horii,
and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, Suite No. 2 and Rapsodie Espagnol

(January 3, 2001 — New York, NY) Samuel Wong will conduct The Mannes Orchestra on Thursday, February 1, 2001 at 8 PM in a program featuring Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Piano Concerto No. 4 with student soloist Shimako Horii, Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, Suite No. 2, and Rapsodie Espagnol at Symphony Space, Broadway and 95th Street, NYC. Winner of this year’s piano concerto competition, Shimako Horii is pursuing her master’s degree at Mannes College of Music, where she is a student of Irina Morozova. Ms. Horii is a graduate of Osaka College of Music in Japan, where she studied with Yasuko Asai. Ms. Horii won a piano competition while in attendance there and subsequently performed Rachmaninoff’s Six Moments Musicaux at a master class given by Anton Dikow. She has also performed extensively in chamber ensembles and piano duos. In 1991, Ms. Horii was a finalist of the Japan International Piano Duo Competition in Tokyo. She is presently studying chamber music with Hiroko Yajima and Anne Setzer at Mannes. Ms. Horii has also appeared in several Mannes Bach 2000 master classes.
