SAMUEL WONG TO CONDUCT THE MANNES ORCHESTRA IN A CONCERT FEATURING WORKS BY BEETHOVEN AND COPLAND
ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2000 AT 8 PM AT ALICE TULLY HALL

Samuel Wong will conduct The Mannes Orchestra on Tuesday, October 31, 2000 at 8 PM at Alice Tully Hall in a concert featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93 and Copland’s Quiet City (1940), El salón México (1936) and Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo(1943), commemorating the Copland Centennial.

The next concert in The Mannes Orchestra series will take place on Thursday, February 1 at 8 PM at Symphony Space.

Samuel Wong was appointed Music Director of The Mannes Orchestra in 1999. He has a distinguished career as a conductor and will begin as music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic this season. He continues to guest conduct, in addition to his position at Mannes College of Music, and will tour with the Royal Philharmonic (London) in November and has future engagements with the orchestras of Bilbao and Milan.

Samuel Wong trained for a career as an ophthamologist before pursuing his musical. He holds both an A.B. and M.D. from Harvard University. He has guest lectured at numerous hospitals, nursing homes, and universities on music and healing, on the neurology of hearing, and on the "Mozart effect."

Mannes College of Music, founded in 1916, is one of the world’s major conservatories of music. A division of New School University, Mannes offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as a Professional Studies Diploma program. Joel Lester is Dean of the College.
