Black Female Servitude Through the Lens of American Food Culture

Through words and images, Black Female Servitude Through the Lens of American Food Culture aims to archive the narratives of black women who were historically trapped in service positions. It explores the relationship between female house slaves and the master’s households where they provided nourishment. The enslaved black woman was forced to establish a sense of identity through her labor, an identity that still shapes modern American foodscapes.
