• Profile:

Maya Ciarrocchi is a New York City based interdisciplinary artist whose work addresses identity, outsiderness and the body as a site of history. Her focus is on unseen and underrepresented populations including communities living in the coal fields of Appalachia, formerly ultra- Orthodox Jews, and Trans* and gender non-conforming people. She is influenced by her previous career as a dance artist not only formally and compositionally, but also in her focus on physicality as a form of expression that can convey meaning outside of language.

Her work has been exhibited in New York at: Abrons Arts Center, Anthology Film Archives, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, The Chocolate Factory, Microscope Gallery, New York Live Arts, and at Artisphere, (VA), Hammer Museum (CA), Borderlines Film Festival (UK), Moving Pictures Festival (CAN). Residencies include the Kala Art Institute, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Swing Space, Sedona Summer Colony, and the Ucross Foundation. She received a Film/Video grant from the Jerome Foundation and project support from the Puffin Foundation. She was awarded a Jeff and a New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) for her work as a projections designer and has collaborated with choreographers and directors such as Wally Cardona, Ping Chong, David Cromer, Merce Cunningham, Kristin Marting, and Bebe Miller among many others. Ciarrocchi is a 2017 Artist in the Marketplace at the Bronx Museum.

Her interdisciplinary project Gender/Power, which she co-directs with her collaborative partner Kris Grey, has been presented at Gibney Dance, the Invisible Dog Arts Center, and Smack Mellon. Gender/Power has received funding support from the MAP Fund and the Franklin Furnace Fund and has been awarded residencies from the Baryshnikov Arts Center, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Process Space.
