Laia Varela is a teacher and contemporary jewelry designer who was born in Spain. After working for seven years as a teacher of and lecturer on multicultural education in Spanish schools and universities, she decided to pursue an artistic path. After training as a jewelry technician at Easo Politeknikoa in San Sebastián (Spain), she moved to Paris in 2015.
Varela started her career in Paris as a designer working for an independent jewelry maker in Montmartre. The same year, she launched her own jewelry brand, LAIA VARELA JOYAS, which is heavily influenced by modern art and architecture.
Her pieces are currently sold in jewelry and museum shops in Spain and France, including the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao. Her jewelry has been featured in national and international magazines like Stylo and British Vogue.
Each year, Varela participates in a number of Paris-based group exhibitions of contemporary jewelry, such as À-te-lier and Paris est un pretexte during Parcours Bijoux (2017) and Label 15 at Galerie Wenge (2018).
