  • Online Resources

    Canvas Orientation for Online Classes

Your online classes will appear in Canvas on the first day of the semester. The first few days are reserved for orientation to Canvas and online learning.

You can log in to Canvas through MyNewSchool. To open the applications drawer, which includes Canvas and other useful programs, click on the Apps icon (three horizontal lines located in the upper right portion of the screen). Clicking on the Canvas link will take you to your Canvas courses.

Requests for user support or training and general inquiries about Canvas should be directed to Distributed Education. Call 212.229.8947 x4463 during business hours or send an email to canvas@newschool.edu.

    Computer Hardware and Software

For all online classes, you will need access to a computer, an internet connection, and a current version of a browser. A broadband Internet connection is desirable for online students. For classes using digital design or graphics programs, a broadband Internet connection is essential. For some classes, a printer, scanner, and additional software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, may be required. If special hardware or software is required for any class, your instructor will let you know as soon as the semester begins.

    Computer and Technology Discounts

As a New School student, you have access to great deals on computer software and hardware. Visit the Services tab in my.newschool.edu, in the Information Technology Services section, for more information.

    University Policies and Procedures

There are certain privileges, rights, and responsibilities associated with membership in the New School community. It is important for you to be familiar with the university's policies and procedures, which help ensure that your New School experience is a positive one. For more information, visit the Student Conduct and Community Standards website.

    Safety and Preparedness

The safety of our students is The New School's first priority. We believe that even as an online student who may not be on campus, you should be familiar with the safety and preparedness procedures adopted by The New School. For more information, visit our safety website.

    New School ID Card

The newcard is the official identification card of The New School. An online-only student is eligible to receive a non-photo newcard once he or she has registered for classes and paid tuition, or made tuition payment arrangements. Non-photo newcards will be mailed to online students upon request. If you would like your newcard sent to you, email newcard@newschool.edu with your full name, N-number, and mailing address.

If you plan to use New School facilities such as Academic Technology labs and university libraries or attend on-campus events, you must obtain a newcard with a photo. To do so, you should plan to visit Campus Card Services at 72 Fifth Avenue (at 13th Street), lower level. For more information on obtaining your newcard, visit the newcard webpage.

    Academic Calendar

The New School's academic calendar is available online. Be sure to familiarize yourself with important dates such as the start and end of classes and university holidays.

    University Learning Center

The University Learning Center (ULC) provides academic support in undergraduate and graduate writing, math, ESL, Adobe Creative Suite, and time management. Students are served through individual tutoring sessions with trained tutors, either in person or online, on an as-needed or weekly basis. You can schedule appointments in advance on Starfish by following the instructions on the ULC website or simply walk in. Online appointments and weekly sessions must be booked directly through the ULC; please email learningcenter@newschool.edu or call 212.229.5121.

The ULC also holds a variety of skill-building workshops on topics such as time management, research writing, and oral presentations. Many of these workshops are available by Livestream for those who cannot attend in person. For more information, visit the ULC website.
