    Whether you are a beginner interested in gaining new skills, a lover of music looking for a creative outlet, or a seasoned musician seeking to advance your career, Mannes NEXT at Mannes College The New School for Music offers you a wide variety of opportunities in music. 

    Mannes NEXT courses and ensembles are open to students, community members, and learners of all musical backgrounds and levels of experience. You can take continuing education courses on a noncredit basis or for general or transfer credit (to be applied to a future degree or certificate program). New School continuing education students have access to the Scherman Music Library and to many free concerts and events held on campus.

    Continuing education courses and ensembles meet in the late afternoon and evening at the Mannes Building, 150 West 85th Street. Most courses meet for one hour each week for a 15-week fall or spring term (please note that several courses meet for two hours per week). See the course catalog for a complete listing of class schedules and meeting locations. Classes are taught by renowned Mannes faculty members at the top of their fields.     Registration for Summer 2015

    Continuing education registration for the summer 2015 term will begin April 20, 2015, for the following courses:

    Beginning Piano

    XINS 1000 A

    Geared to the enthusiastic first-timer, Beginning Piano explores the keyboard layout, basic finger technique, hand coordination, and fundamentals of music notation. Students learn to play simple tunes as they master basic music theory principles. Enjoy playing some of your favorite classical, folk, and popular pieces individually and as part of a piano ensemble. Note: In order to complete homework assignments, students must have access to a piano or keyboard.

    8 sessions; Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:00 - 8:15 PM

    Flute Ensemble

    XPER 1009 A

    For flutists of all levels; this ensemble rehearses and performs from the flute literature.

    Chamber Music

    XPER 1002 A

    This course features small-group instrumental coaching with renowned Mannes faculty, performance opportunities, and a wide range of repertoire spanning a variety of time periods and genres. Chamber Music at Mannes is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. Ensembles are matched on the basis of availability, musical background, and experience. Students at all levels are encouraged to join. Placement auditions are held the first week of each semester.

    12 sessions. Rehearsal scheduling is flexible and is determined on the basis of participant availability.
