This year, all auditions for spring entry will be held through video recording upload. Recorded video auditions may be submitted at any point during the application process, but for priority review they must be submitted no later than the dates listed below.

      Spring 2022: November 1, 2021
      Fall 2022: February 1, 2022

We expect that the live auditions will take place for fall entry in February and March at our New York campus, as long as safety guidelines permit. Applicants will be invited to schedule audition times once their applications have been received. Audition scheduling typically opens in late December. Students who are unable to attend live auditions may submit video recordings.

Applicants submitting video auditions will upload recordings through The New School’s online Application Center. It is not necessary to submit a professionally produced video, but the sound quality should be of high quality. We strongly recommend the use of an external microphone. Applicants should also ensure that proper lighting is used and that the camera shows full range of movement and use of instrument (if applicable).

Once your application and audition upload is complete, you’ll be invited to schedule an online video conference interview. Interviews are ten minutes and are intended to help us to get to know one another better. There’s nothing specific you need to prepare.

For specific program audition requirements, see our Graduate Audition Requirements or Undergraduate Audition Requirements page.

Mannes emphasizes the performance of music of our time. One of the required major solo works for the graduate audition is a contemporary work composed since 1970. Alternatively, an additional solo work may be performed that meets this requirement. This may be a standard contemporary work, a lesser-known work, or an original composition or arrangement by the auditionee.

Note: If you are unfamiliar with contemporary repertoire, please email us at [email protected] to discuss how you can still have a successful audition at Mannes.

Mandatory COVID-19 Health and Safety Requirements for All In-Person Auditions

Upon checking in for an in-person audition:

      • All applicants and visitors must be fully vaccinated and present to New School staff proof of a negative PCR test. Proof of vaccination (e.g., CDC card—hard copy or picture or Excelsior Pass) must be with a vaccine authorized by the U.S. FDA or for emergency use by the World Health Organization. Proof of a negative PCR test result, received no longer than seven days from the date of all on-campus events, is required for access to campus facilities.
      • All external guests will be required to attest that they are currently experiencing no symptoms and are not actively in quarantine or isolation due to a positive test result, exposure, or recent travel.

All applicants and visitors must wear a mask in all university buildings and indoor spaces for the duration of their visit, including during the audition. Applicants auditioning in person must remain masked while performing on their instrument or singing. Applicants who would prefer to audition without a mask should email [email protected] to change their audition submission method to a recorded audition.

Applicants and visitors who do not meet these requirements will not be allowed to stay in the building or attend their in-person audition.

The health and well-being of our community and the neighbors with whom we interact are our top priority. As we continue to monitor COVID-19 cases in New York City and in our community, audition dates and times are subject to change.
